Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house.1

What does it mean to believe? For even the demons believe in God. There was a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”2 When Jesus reached the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. . . . “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”3 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!4

What word of the Lord specifically and unequivocably points to Jesus as the only way to salvation? Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.5 Jesus is the Way; he modeled for us the way to salvation. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.6

Jesus is the Truth (not our world view). Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.7 Apart from knowledge of His Name as he had revealed them to us through Scripture, we cannot claim to know God the Father nor Jesus the Son. O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.8 I do not ask for these only, but also those who will believe in me through your word.9 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.10

Jesus is the Life. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.11 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.12

Do you believe that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures13?

The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.

Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God.15
