This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.1
Mysteries past hidden now revealed through Christ that we are saved by grace through faith. And this is not our own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast2—a faith that is roused through hearing, and hearing through the Word of Christ.3
The same Word that was in the beginning, with God, and the Word was God.4 Through him all things were made [the story of Creation].5 And the Word became flesh.6 Yes, Jesus himself opens our ears that we may hear and opens the eyes of our hearts that we may understand.
The best metaphor would be Christ calling out to Lazarus from the tomb.7 The life giving Word (the call) rejuvenated Lazarus’ dead body; at the same instance faith was awakened and he believed, responded, and came out alive. Simultaneously, Lazarus became a new creation.8 Everyone who believes [present tense] that Jesus is the Christ has been born [perfect tense] of God. . .9 As shown through simple English structure, the ability to believe is caused or proof of life.
But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.10 This narrative is the power of God for salvation11 bringing about a new birth and awakening faith.
Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.12 Before departing, Jesus said to his disciples, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations . . .”13
