For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of Scriptures we might have hope.1
What is written is believable; assuming that it had been written by a reputable author, well thought of, organized, and concise. The verse above refers to the compilation of Scripture, which comprise the Old Testament (OT)—the laws, the history of Israel, wisdom books, and the prophets (all 39 books). Later, when Jesus had been revealed as Lord and Savior, a compilation of his works was added after his death and resurrection, now referred to as the New Testament (all 27 books). The Bible is actually His story! Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.2
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.3 Through Scripture we understand the depth of God’s love.4 That his Word strengthens, encourages, and comforts.5 His Word cleanses us—Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.6 Through Scripture the Holy Spirit is able to guide us; he reminds us of all things.7
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.8
Scripture is the sword of the Spirit,9 our weapon against the lies of the enemy.10 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.11 I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.12
We grow in faith through the word of Christ.13 Apart from knowledge of Scriptures, we presume that we are able to please God. But we deceive ourselves, for apart from faith we are unable to please God. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.14
Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.15 Open my eyes,16 make me understand,17 teach me.18 Give me understanding, that I may keep your law, and observe it with my whole heart.19 Lead me.20 Incline my heart to your testimonies . . .21 You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word.22
Let all his servants magnify his name and declare, OUR HELP IS IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, WHO MADE HEAVEN AND EARTH.23
