Blessed Are the Forgiven

Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.1

At the right time2 Jesus came to bring good news3—what God had planned since the beginning, a new covenant revealed through Jesus, a new standard through which man may be saved. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.4 While nailed to the cross before surrendering his spirit, Jesus said, “It is finished.”5 He knew he had accomplished God’s plan. And his sacrifice was sufficient to cause perfection for anyone who believes in him. For those who believe and repent, their past, present, and future sins are forgiven, covered by the Blood of Jesus.6 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.7

Jesus Christ didn’t do away with the Law but fulfilled it,8 and enacted a new covenant—salvation not through law but by grace. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.9 The Law was introduced that we may have knowledge of sin.10 And so all fail and fall short of the glory of God.11 A higher law is now in operation; to illustrate, the natural Law of Gravity exists (even if we don’t believe it; try jumping off a building). Yet, planes are able to lift and fly because it operates on a different plane, or a higher law—the Law of Aerodynamics.

I acknowledge my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.12 We all are sinners, and apart from Jesus all our good works are like filthy rags. We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.13 But for those who are poor in spirit, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, they are blessed.14 For those who acknowledge their need for a Savior, they are redeemed, justified, forgiven, made holy, accepted by the Beloved, adopted by the Father, sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, and entitled to all the spiritual blessings.15

Therefore let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found . . .16
God as your Father promises through Jesus, I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you. Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD. Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.17
