Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.1
We have no excuse to remain ignorant of the Truth; with every media to our disposal, God’s Word written in various languages, through forms that we desire, adapted to our learning mold—visual or auditory. To remain ignorant is a choice. God will not interfere nor is he shaken by it; but we are not free from the consequences of our choice. Yes, the truth is offensive, but it remains the truth. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; . . .2 Our opinion doesn’t count; it is relative. If we rely on opinion or our own understanding, we shall be like tumbleweeds, shifting to-and-fro the dunes as the wind blows in whatever direction. Only an absolute truth matters as a standard or fixed point to help us navigate life.
The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.3 If so, what keeps us from learning God’s Word? Sometimes we have to be prodded or reminded. Observe that in one of his books, John repeatedly wrote “I am writing,” or “I write to you”4 thirteen times (13x). The importance of the written word cannot have been more emphasized. He knew its weight! Fulfilling his purpose as an intermediary for the people that the Father gave him,5 Jesus prayed, Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.6
We need to own a bible and to read our bible daily. Study the words in context; i.e., read at least a chapter daily; get into the habit of doing so first-things-first daily. Make a decision to commit to it. It is food for our soul. No matter how much we care for our body, if we don’t feed our soul, we are starved and as good as dead. God’s revelations are partial, progressive, and conditional. He tests our resolve and faithfulness. Not our spurt, every now-and-then, when-needed, or feel-like.
Our help. . . Yes, admit it or not, we need help! We need a Barnabas in our life to thrive. We need to hear again-and-again what Paul knows, And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.7 Thus, do not stop the habit of meeting together to encourage one another.8 We need a community of believers to strengthen, encourage, and comfort one another. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, . . . work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.9 Like going to the gym to work-out your muscles which you have; you don’t need to work-for your muscles; it already exists.
. . . is in the name . . . There are two things that God esteems—his name and his word.10 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, . . .11 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me . . .12
. . . of the LORD . . . When God got Moses’ attention and appointed him to lead his chosen people out of slavery, Moses feared. “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel, out of Egypt?” . . . and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ . . . God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.”13
. . . who made heaven and earth. God revealed himself through the pages of Scripture; E.g., through his various names—Creator14 is one of them.
May we humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt us. May we be sober minded and watchful. Our adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. May we resist him, firm in our faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by our brothers throughout the world. And after we have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called us to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish us. To Jesus be the dominion forever and ever. AMEN!15
