The LORD Is My Rock

I love you, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.1

Is it any wonder that God delights in David? God himself said, I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.2 David not only sought God diligently, but also passionately loved God.  Through Scripture3 David discovered God’s commands and what delights him. David loved God with his heart, soul, and might.4

In reality, God is the one who first loved us—God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.5 Even at our sinful state, God loved and pursued us. God is holy6; therefore, he demands perfection—For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.7 Yet he knows that we couldn’t attain the righteousness that he demands by our own effort; so he sent his Son whom he loved to become flesh8 and die on the cross to save us.9 Jesus is the unblemished sacrifice10 that washed away the sins of anyone who believes11 in his finish work.12

By design God created man in his own image, male and female13—by doing so God establishes man’s identity. At a young age David was set apart and anointed as King. And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward.14 David was given a heart that understands—he knew that his help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.15 His identity could not be shaken. Next, God proceeds to bless man16—that man may be a blessing to others. But due to sin that design was corrupted and we are reaping the consequences. God’s intent is to restore us, and be made whole again. He chose those who are to be adopted as sons,17 that they may participate in his mission—To go and make disciples.18

Jesus intends to make us whole again. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.19 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing was of hostility, by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.20
