But Who Do You Say I Am?

The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.1

We had a powerful teaching of the Word during our Sunday Service, unpacking the meaning of the Son of Man2 (a name Jesus used 88 times in the NT3). It would be difficult for our finite minds to fully grasp and know an infinite God. But in his wisdom, God revealed facets of himself through the Bible. Partially and progressively God introduced himself through His Names in each of the OT and NT books.

Some of the names are as follows: In Genesis, he opens with God,4 God of seeing,5 LORD will provide:6 Exodus, I AM,7 I am the LORD your healer,8 jealous God,9 I am the LORD who sanctifies you,10 God of the spirits of all flesh;11 Deuteronomy,  faithful God;12 Judges, LORD is Peace;13 1 Samuel, God of knowledge;14 2 Samuel, rock of my salvation;15 2 Kings, Holy One of Israel;16 EZRA, God of heaven and earth;17 Nehemiah, awesome,18 good Spirit,19 LORD our Lord;20 Job, breath of the Almighty;21 Psalm, Most High,22 shepherd,23 great king over all the earth,24 Mighty One,25 helper,26 Lord my God,27 God of vengeance,28 judge of the earth,29 LORD, our Maker;30 Proverbs, Holy One;31 Ecclesiastes, God who makes everything;32

Isaiah, Holy, holy, holy,33 Immanuel,34 Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace,35 LORD, your Redeemer,36 Rock,37 Healer,38 God of truth;39 Jeremiah, fountain of living waters,40 God at hand;41  Daniel, Most High;42 Zephaniah, LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save;43 Zechariah, Branch,44 the LORD will be one and his name one;45 Malachi, sun of righteousness.46

These are some of God’s names enough for us to know him more on a deeper level. Although he revealed himself in part by his names, we don’t have the option to choose whom we want him to be. He is all of his names and attributes combined; although we may call out specifically his particular name for a particular need.

I recall a conversation I had while introducing glimpses of verses from the OT (which admittedly may be brutal at times); taken aback she responded, “My god is a god of love.” Indeed he is! But more. I’ve likewise witnessed a person so adverse to God but when it came to a need, she would plead that we pray for her particular need; and when answered, forgets the God who makes all things possible. I’ve had men whom I’ve walked with daily studying book upon book, but as the truth were revealed and contradictory to their beliefs, they excused themselves from continuing the Bible study. There are also those due to false expectations have turned away. Yet, I do not fret. For I know God’s Word shall not return to him empty without accomplishing that which he purpose, and shall succeed.47

There is value in the daily discipline of studying Scripture. There he reveals himself and his will. He has exalted above all things his name and his word.48 Lest we be deluded into thinking about our salvation, consider what John says, And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.49

I believe Jesus is Lord and Savior!50

Thanks. Hopefully, the Words of Scripture prove not only informative, or directive, but authoritative. 🙂
