Much of understanding is acquired through application. A good teacher bends to the students ability and readiness to learn; a great teacher involves them.
God who is infinite is the greatest teacher. He stoops to our level knowing that our finite minds can only grasp that which it is familiar with. Thus, for those with ears to hear, the Bible is amply supplied with figures of speech—metaphors, similes, hyperboles that we can grow in our knowledge of God and ultimately fear him and love him1—although his revelations are partial, progressive, and conditional (for those who feel self-sufficient, he uses parables2).
The potter and the clay3 is an illustration. There are 3 elements: the potter, the clay, and the potter’s wheel.
It is encouraging to know that the clay is molded by an expert craftsman. Meticulous care is carried out in choosing the right combination of clay, kneading and treading, and curing prior to its use. Typically, obedience is preceded by instructions. “Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.”4
The potter knows its clay. For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. 5 Even the hairs on my head are all numbered. . .6 But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you: I have called you by name, you are mine.”7
The potter is free to do as he pleases with the clay.8 He has various tools to accomplish the purpose for his prized possession. As he spins the wheel his hand gently molds the clay into a pot. Then he sets it aside for curing, a stage of waiting and observation; before he subjects it to the fire.9 Unless the clay is processed through each stage, it will not be useful for its purpose.
Let them praise the name of the LORD! For he commanded and they were created. And he established them forever and ever; he gave a decree, and it shall not pass away.10
